Frequently asked questions

What makes a home 'suitable' for adopting a guinea pig from NEGPR?

1. All guinea pigs will require an indoor or temperature controlled environment (insulated and heated shed/garage). 

2. A cage sized a minimum of 120 cm x 60 cm for a pair of guinea pigs. C and C cages sized 4x2 or larger or cages over 140 cm are preferred. Guineas are active and need space. 

3. Plenty of hay for foraging. No woodshavings or sawdust. Fresh vegetables and fruit twice daily. Fresh water in a bowl or bottle.

4. Hideys or places they can hide in the cage. At least one per guinea pig.

5. Must not be used for breeding or passed on to anyone else. If you are unable to care for the guineas they must be returned to the rescue.

6. The guineas must be registered with a vet and veterinary treatment must be sought if they are unwell.


Could you briefly describe the steps involved in your adoption process?


1. Email negprescue@gmail.com 

2. Send information about the home you are offering and guinea pigs you are interested in.

3. Home visit virtually or in person

4. Collect guinea pigs from the rescue, sign adoption  form and make donation 

5.  Two week follow-up to check guineas have settled (virtual).

 

What costs are involved in adopting a guinea pig, such as adoption fees or recommended setup costs?

£40 for a pair of guinea pigs. This is to help support the care of the guinea pigs as the rescue

Please consider costs of keeping guinea pigs. This includes providing food and hay, paying for pet sitting,  and vet bills.


What kind of support do you offer to adopters after they take a guinea pig home?

I can always be contacted for advise.

If you are unable to keep the guineas they must be returned to the rescue.
